My KEYS100 Fundraising

Dear Friends and Supporters, I haven't decided if what I am embarking on is the result of complete insanity or a midlife crisis. Perhaps it is a combination of both. However, through my efforts - and hopefully through yours in concert with me - I will reach not only a personal goal but I will accomplish something far more important - raising funds for two causes that are close to my heart. On May 15 and 16, 2010, I will embark on a 100-mile ultramarathon race that begins in Key Largo, Florida and ends in Key West. The ultimate test? I have only 32 hours to finish. The event is called the Keys 100 (its website is Keys100.com so feel free to take a look). My objective is to raise $10,000 that will be split evenly between the Quincy Animal Shelter and the Weymouth Food Pantry. I can assure you that every dime I raise will go directly to the charities. Any and all overhead with regard to my training, my travel, my accommodations and anything else involved with the race will be happily absorbed by me. I will be hosting a couple of fundraisers in the future, which you are all certainly invited to. One is a meat raffle at Kelly's Landing in Weymouth, Massachusetts from 3-7 p.m. on November 7. The other is December 7 at the Hancock Tavern in Quincy, Massachusetts from 5-10 p.m. Any and all donations are gratefully accepted. We live in challenging times financially but even a small donation from many will add up to a meaningful benefit to both charities. The effort and love invested by the wonderful people at both these organizations is an ongoing inspiration to me and makes what I am doing a very small gesture to aid their tireless devotion to the vulnerable in their communities. The money for the shelter will be earmarked for an emergency medical fund, which will go to medical care for injured and/or abused animals and to spay and neuter feral cats in an effort to control the overpopulation problem on the South Shore. The money going to the food pantry - if I am fortunate enough to reach $5,000 - will provide groceries for 330 families. For 23 years, I have chronicled the sweat and perseverance of other athletes - many among the best in the world in their respective sports - as a writer for the Boston Globe. It has been a privilege. And although I wouldn't begin to compare my quest with anything those elite competitors have ever done, for one 32-hour period in May, I am hoping to push myself to accomplish something I previously would've never dreamed possible. I am undertaking this in the sincere hope of making a difference for deserving people in Weymouth and deserving animals in Quincy. Thank you for your consideration. Our sole purpose is to feed the hungry of Weymouth.

"Thanks to a group of concerned citizens, which then became The Weymouth Council for the Hungry, the Weymouth Food Pantry opened in 1987 with a little food and a lot of love in its heart. There was then, and is now, a real need for a food pantry in Weymouth. What we do is feed the hungry and those at risk of going hungry. We see the young and the old, families and individuals, the working poor and those who cannot work because of poor health, age of incapacitating mental illness. Some are in or trying to recover from a life crisis.

Anyone in town who needs help is welcome. Our staff of volunteers is here to help."

CarePacks is a non-profit organization—staffed and managed entirely by volunteers—that is dedicated to sending care packages to US troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Founded in 2004, CarePacks' goal is to provide these soldiers with supplies to help improve their morale, mental health, and quality of life, and to remind soldiers that they are remembered by people “back home.”

CarePacks’ care packages contain high-calorie food products, undergarments, personal care items, books, magazines, and more. Each package also contains at least one letter or card from a child so that the soldier who receives the package has a personal connection to someone back in the United States. CarePacks coordinates its efforts with local schools, Cub Scout packs, Boy and Girl Scout troops, churches, and other organizations to involve the community in the support process and to inform them about the needs of US military personnel.
